New Community Foundation Report Reveals $34 Million in Federal Funding at Risk for Gallatin County Nonprofits

One Valley Community Foundation urges community giving through Give Big Gallatin Valley to help nonprofits weather uncertainty

Gallatin County, MT — A new report from One Valley Community Foundation highlights the growing risks facing Gallatin County’s nonprofit sector as federal funding becomes increasingly unpredictable. Based on survey responses from 44 local organizations, the report shows that nearly $34 million in anticipated federal support for 2025 is now at risk. Without that funding, 75% of federally supported nonprofit respondents say they could not sustain current operations for more than a year.

The report, Federal Funding and Gallatin County Nonprofits, details how federal dollars are foundational in supporting critical services across the region—including healthcare, housing, food security, education, and beyond. For many organizations, this funding is not just helpful— it’s essential to delivering the programs and services our community relies on.

“Local nonprofits are facing significant challenges as federal funding becomes increasingly uncertain,” said Bridget Wilkinson, President & CEO of One Valley Community Foundation. “This report highlights what’s at risk—but also what’s possible. While we can’t control federal decisions, we can invest locally and stand with the people and organizations that keep Gallatin County strong.”

Among the organizations that rely on federal funding is Haven, Gallatin County’s only nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking. For more than 40 years, Haven has provided emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, and violence prevention education to individuals and families in crisis. As a trusted and essential resource in our community, any disruption to their services would leave a significant gap in care and safety for those in need.

“We anticipate a 30% reduction in the number of survivors we can serve on an annual basis should federal funds disappear,” said Haven’s Executive Director, Erica Coyle. “This translates to 400 survivors in our community being turned away from safety and support when they need it most.”

To help support organizations in Gallatin County during this time of instability, One Valley encourages community members to take part in Give Big Gallatin Valley, a 24-hour online giving initiative happening May 1–2. Now in its 11th year, One Valley’s Give Big connects donors with more than 250 local nonprofits and raises flexible, unrestricted funding that allows organizations to remain resilient during changing circumstances. Learn more at GiveBigGV.org.

“Give Big raises the kind of flexible, unrestricted funding nonprofits need most right now,” said Wilkinson. “It’s one of the most powerful ways our community can respond to uncertainty—by giving local organizations the freedom to meet needs as they arise.”

To deepen the conversation on this report and explore local solutions, One Valley invites donors and community members to a presentation and discussion on Monday, April 28, from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at HRDC Marketplace. The event will feature insights from One Valley’s President & CEO, Bridget Wilkinson, and share tangible ways to support nonprofits navigating a rapidly shifting funding landscape. Attendees can RSVP at www.onevalley.org/in-our-backyard.
